Round 2 - Fitzroy vs Kew Comets

Stanley's perspective on the game (as an on field leader)...

1st  Quarter
The sun was shining the siren went then we got thrashed.
We had a good start with Sam Clark getting the clearance and it was locked in our forward line for a good five minutes. Sam Ward, Laird and Kyle played a great role building the wall. But we weren't able to convert on the scoreboard. Soon Kew cleared it out and got it down the ground where Will won a one on one with their full forward then kicked it to Sam Clark but they got it back in there forward fifty and scored a goal then another, another and a another. Then at quarter time they were up by four goals.

2nd Quarter
The second quarter was better for us than the first. Kew only scored the one goal but we still had nothing on the score board. Our defence played a very good role only letting them get one goal although it was down in their forward line for most of the quarter. Our ball movement had lifted the intensity. We were doing most things right but weren't able to get it on the scoreboard. Sam Ward, Lachie and Sam Clark played great periods off play such as crumming, run and carry and going for the ball in one on one situations. The quarter also featured Max doing a good run across the wing which started by me of course  by winning a one on one and quickly clearing the ball to him before he burst into action.

3rd Quarter
This quarter was much the same as the second and we only let them get the one goal. Again Sam Ward, Lachie, Issac and Noah Dekker looked like they had a good quarter from the side lines with great run and carry off half back into the forward line. Credit to the midfielders for keeping the ball In our forward half for most of the quarter. For the whole of the quarter our ball movement was probably as strong as it was in the whole of the game but still we were unable to hit the scoreboard.

4th Quarter
We started strongly and were eventually rewarded with Lucas's goal midway through the quarter. But the next half of the quarter was mostly spent in Kew's forward half and they got a couple of goals at the end. I think that I did a really good tackle which probably could have been rewarded with a free kick for holding the ball. Credit to the captains Noah Dekker and Lachie. I think that they led the team beautifully through the game. I was pleased to get the medal but think some one else could have got it cause it said fairest player on the ground.

After the game John said that our intensity and aggression was there but we needed to work some stuff at training. Overall I think it was a great game and that we should keep it up. Overall I think we kind of didn't get thrashed if you cut out the scoreboard. Hope you enjoyed in Written by Stan.

Sean's perspective on the game (as Team Manager) ...

Unfortunately, the boys were well beaten again on the weekend by a better side. The boys kicked 1 goal, 0 points (6) to the Kew comets 7 goals 4 points (46). Although our kids tried hard and went in physically harder at the start of the game, Kew were simply more polished in most aspects of the game.  They ran to the right spots, hit their targets more often than we did and switched the play at every opportunity.

Stanley received a medal from Kew for his efforts while Lucas kicked our only goal. Joseph played his best game so far for Fitzroy. Other players who performed strongly were Joe, Sam Ward, Sam Clarke, Will, Finn, Dom, Mason, Isaac and Laird.

Compared to other teams in gold we're probably a full month of training behind other teams. Last week’s turnout at training was good (22 players) however lower attendance at the pre-season sessions have made it more challenging for the Coaching team to get the boys ready for the start of the season. Perhaps in a few more weeks, when the boys have trained as a full team more often, we'll see them return to the competitive form they showed last season. Hopefully our parents are also helping the boys with their footy homework!

Round 1 – Fitzroy vs Canterbury B

A tough day at the office for the boys in their first game of the season against the fast, well drilled Canterbury side. A key message from John before the game was 'don't panic' and to get in front. Despite some valiant attempts and strong passages of play, intensity at the ball was an issue for much of the day for the team, as was the skill and pace of the Canterbury side. Standout players were Sam Ward (outstanding all day), Dom, Kyle and Jack (three marks in the first quarter). Honorable mentions to Sam Clark, Max, Stanley and Laird, all of whom worked hard and had an impact. Notable was Yianni's one on one contest to score a goal for the team in the first quarter, Issac for his massive leap in the ruck in the second quarter, Noah Cameroux for his strong mark in the third quarter and Noah Dekker for his ferocious tackling in the final quarter. Notable also was the bone crunching tackle applied to the irrepressible Lachie in third quarter. Post game, there was controversy when it became apparent that John had replaced the footy cards with lolly bags for the players award. Congratulations to Noah Dekker and Lachie on winning these. A big thanks to John, Paul, Lance and Scott for the pre-season coaching.

Final scores:

Q1: Fitzroy 1.0.6 - Canterbury 1.1.7
