Round 14 - Fitzroy vs Kew

Match report from Sonia ...

A beautiful, sunny day at Edinburgh Gardens was the backdrop to an exciting, hard fought
second last match of the season. John talked to the boys about focus and concentration.
He reminded them about the alien invader drill and how they needed to enact that on the floor. The parents didn’t know what he was talking about, but all agreed that was a great idea. The grounds has very narrow wings, so John highlights to Mason and Joe about the importance of them doing their role. They took him at his word and the wings were the backdrop for some bloody battles. First drop starts with Joe doing a beautiful kick to Sam Ward who marks the ball marking him as the legend he is. The boys have had a good start and take it down to Fitzroy’s forward line. Stanley was very unlucky not to get a goal, and shows what a skilled player he is. Mason, Sam Clarke and Lachie provide excellent work in defence and the Kew team is largely contained throughout the game. Lachie in his usual style creates opportunities and brings others into the game. Boys giving away too many free kicks in the back line and everyone’s frustrations mount. Isaac played very well in the ruck and as usual the opposition could not match his skill. Max makes a beautiful run down the ground and just misses a goal. Bad luck Max, great play though. Noah Cameroux who had an amazing first quarter. He was lethal in the forward line and made a beautiful shot for goal that will remain in our hearts forever. First quarter, Gerry talks to the forward line about lowering their eyes so they can pick out their targets. John reminds them about the importance of playing in front. No mention of aliens. 2nd quarter starts with Tom Ward who shows his signature style with a beautiful mark and kick. What a great season he is having. Finn puts in a mammoth quarter and fights harder than anyone. He goes flat out all day and fights bravely to the end. Both sides finding it hard to score a goal. Darcy plays hard at the contest and the ball is sent flying up Fitzroy’s way. The ball was greatly contested and Will kicks forward, just one of the many great moments he has during the quarter. Laird as usual shows no fear and plays very hard at the ball. What a brilliant player her. Darcy shows a magical touch, and takes a ruck tap out. Jack without knowing how kicks a goal. Third quarter Jerry tells the boys to play their own game and to move the ball on the forward line quickly.. John again talks to the boys about the importance of staying in front. After a period of congested play on in Fitzroy’;s forward line, Yianni the fierce warrior he is breaks out of a pack and kicks to Max who kicks to Jack. Jack narrowly misses kicking a goal, a moment that will haunt his dreams until next season. Fitzroy still not playing in front and giving away free kicks in their back line. Sam Clarke seems to be everywhere and shows his usual attack on the ball. Noah Dekker tackled everything and everyone. The Kew boys won’t forget him in a hurry. .Tom crashes through the pack at centre half-forward. Kyle having a terrific quarter with no-one being able to match his lightning speed and ball skills. Dom’s pure athleticism makes him stand out from the crowd, he seems to be everywhere. The final quarter starts with neither side able to retain any obvious advantage and the Fitzroy’s parents nerves are shot. Laird plays a desperate game in defence. Alex takes on five of the Kew boys, they seem to be confused as to what was happening to them. Alex played at full tilt all day.. Lucas shows mesmerizing form, kicking out long and accurately from full back. Terrific overhead marking from him all day. Scott talks to the boys about the importance about being good losers and looking the other team in the eye when they shake hands. Sam is awarded best on ground and everyone cheers in appreciation.

What a match!!!

Rob's postscript ...

Despite Kew being the better side on the day, the game was also a harsh lesson for the boys on the perils of debating the umpires call (regardless as to their thoughts as to the quality of the decision).  Isaac's dad as Goal Umpire showed how it's done ... took his first quarter scoring decision being overturned in good grace and soldiered on. Nice work Andy. Great performances too, the night before. Pantomime transcending into the realm of art!
